100 down

It is the end of the summer term. For those with them, the children have finished school. People up and down the land are looking forward to well-earned holidays. People are ready for a rest, a chance to recharge the batteries before we start to do it all again. 

For me, it is a time to reflect. I have done my first 100 days as Chief Executive. Wow it flew by. A chance to reflect on how I think I am doing. Have I listened enough? Have I shared a view about what I think are the most important things? Have I built new relationships both inside and outside the organisation? Can I show we are improving? Are we making progress and paying attention to the things we are already good at? 

Recently at a staff open forum I asked how we are doing? I got some honest feedback. People can see what we are trying to do. People are prepared to join us on the journey but  remain sceptical. The barometer group told me roughly the same but shared a sense of frustration and then last week……

The 40 of our staff in the barometer group “kicked the tyres” on a plan. A plan to do four things:

  1. To define the behavioural standards we expect of everyone.
  2. Measure people against those standards.
  3. Give them the opportunity and means to develop.
  4. Apply positive and negative consequences for their performance.

People got it. It made sense.

So we begin. September will see us launch our “Rebuilding relationships programme”. A highlight of that will be the  ‘The Big Conversation’ on the 14th September. A chance for us to have a series of chats during one day right across the organisation. You will hear more about it in the coming weeks. 

If you get a break from work over the next few weeks, enjoy it. We appreciate your hard work, your commitment and skill. For that I thank you. 

100 days has flown by. Here is to the next 100.
