Dedicated HCA wins inaugural Health Hero Award

Dedicated Healthcare Assistant Yvonne Hartley has been chosen as the first recipient of a new recognition award at Shropshire’s world-renowned orthopaedic hospital.

Yvonne Hartley, who works in the Main Outpatients Department at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, received her Health Hero Award from Chief Executive Mark Brandreth.

The monthly award has been instigated to give staff the opportunity to highlight individuals or teams who go above and beyond the call of duty in supporting patients and colleagues. Yvonne was nominated by Gill Lawrence, who is a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in the Rheumatology team.

“Yvonne consistently goes that extra mile with our rheumatology patients,” said Gill. “She is regularly raising money for the Oswestry Rheumatology Association, both inside and out of work.

“She looks after our team and patients in clinic and always has a positive approach. I can always rely on Yvonne for support and I can think of no more deserving recipient of this award than her.”

Yvonne was delighted to be receiving the inaugural Health Hero Award, but was also eager to make sure she highlighted the exceptional team ethic amongst her colleagues.

“It’s very nice to be recognised like this,” she said. “I was shocked when I was told I had won the award, but honoured too.

“I see it as an award not just for me, but for the whole team. We’re like a family in rheumatology and everyone supports each other. People are always bringing me all sorts of bric-a-brac to sell for my fundraising, so it’s a real team effort.”

Chief Executive Mark Brandreth instigated the new Health Hero Award, and believes Yvonne is a deserving first recipient.

“It is important that we celebrate great people,” said Mark. “This award is a way of giving a little something back as a thank you for all the hard work of our fantastic staff.

“We had a lot of nominations for this first award and it was a pleasure to read them all. Gill’s nomination for Yvonne really stood out. Yvonne is clearly someone who goes the extra mile for our patients every day and truly embodies our Trust values.

“We will be presenting this award on a monthly basis, so I look forward to getting out and about meeting lots more amazing people in the course of presenting it in the future.”
