Doctor with an infectious smile lands September Health Hero Award

A doctor described as a ‘team player who puts her patients first’ has won the latest Health Hero Award at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.

Dr Snezhana Kostova – affectionately known to both patients and staff as Dr Hana – has won the monthly award after being nominated by her colleagues in the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI) at the Oswestry-based hospital.

The award, which was announced at today’s meeting of the hospital’s Board of Directors, was presented to Dr Hana, who is a Clinical Fellow in MCSI, by Chief Executive Mark Brandreth.

“All the staff say how fantastic Dr Hana is,” said Rebecca Warren, Ward Manager on the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries.

“On the day that we decided to nominate her, we had a patient praising her for how caring she is, and how lovely she is. We get good feedback about Dr Hana all the time.

“She displays all the qualities that you would expect from a doctor but, just as importantly, she displays all the staff values as well. Dr Hana always goes the extra mile to ensure patients are happy and is a real team player.

“Dr Hana has this extraordinary smile that is permanently on show. This smile is infectious. If you were in hospital you would want to be cared for by Dr Hana.

“She’s been great with the patients and is also keen to get involved with the outside activities of the unit, such as the walks we organise.”

Dr Hana added: “I was very pleased and very shocked to be told I had won this award. It is a lovely thing to be recognised by your colleagues for the job you do.

“I must say that we have a great team here on MCSI and I couldn’t do anything without them. They’ve helped me a lot, especially at the beginning when I came here just over a year ago. I didn’t know the systems or anything, and they gave me great support.”

Mark Brandreth was delighted to present a Health Hero Award certificate to Dr Hana, who becomes the first doctor to win the award since it was launched earlier this year.

Previous winners include a Healthcare Assistant, a Theatre Nurse and a receptionist.

“I was struck by the incredibly positive comments we have received about Dr Hana from both her colleagues and patients,” said Mark.

“She is clearly an asset to the organisation, and I was delighted to present her with her Health Hero Award.”
