RJAH staff scouting for adventure in Switzerland

A group of staff at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital (RJAH) who spend their free time volunteering with the Scouts are gearing up for a break away from the hospital to embark on an action-packed trip to Switzerland.

The staff, who all work in different departments of the hospital, will be in charge of more than 20 youngsters between the ages of eight and 18 years old during the trip.

As part of the trip, the Scouts and RJAH team will take part in a host of adrenaline-fuelled, team building activities including climbing, tobogganing, hiking up mountains, and much more.

They will set off for Kandersteg International Scout Centre this week.

Members of the RJAH team include Dawn Pugh, DXA Technician; Simon Vernon, Porter; Michael Hodge, who works in the Finance department; and Jane Herbert, Sister and Specialist Foot and Ankle Practitioner.

Between them the team have racked up more than 75 years’ voluntary experience with the Scouts, and this trip will be Sister Herbert’s fourth expedition to Switzerland.

Speaking ahead of the trip, Dawn said: “We’re all extremely excited, it’s going to be great fun, not just for the youngsters but also for us adults. The part I’m looking most forward to is the tobogganing.”

Dawn also said the team are keen to dispel the misconceptions about the Scouts.

She said: “Many think that we go on these trips for free but that’s not the case, we have to not only pay to go along but also use up our own annual leave to do so.

“We’ll also be staying in a tent during our time out there.

“These kind of trips are hard work and prove a real challenge for not just the youngsters but for us too, that doesn’t mean to say it isn’t great fun but it certainly isn’t a holiday.”

During their time in Switzerland, the children and RJAH staff will also meet fellow Scouts from across the world.

Dawn added: “We can’t wait, it will be a fantastic experience. We must just pay a special mention to the 1st Gobowen Scout Group, who we’re all members of, and our Group Scout Leader Brenda Cassidy, who is just wonderful. Simon is with the Ellesmere Scouts but he too will be joining us.”
