Our Service

The Montgomery Unit at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital is one of five specialist bone cancer centres in the UK. We are approved and directly funded by  NHS England for the treatment of primary bone sarcomas.

We also diagnose and treat patients with soft tissue sarcomas, bone metastases, benign bone and soft tissue tumours and tumour-like conditions.

The unit can be found on the ground floor of the hospital (at Location 12) in the £15.1 million Theatre and Ward Development, which opened in August 2015.

What happens once you are referred into the service?

Once referred into our service, you will be invited for an appointment to see one of our Consultants.
We may arrange for imaging of the problem to help with diagnosis. This could include:
  • Ultrasound
  • X-ray
  • MRI
  • CT

We may also arrange for a biopsy to be taken. Please click here for more information on this. Please note biopsy results can take up to 10-14 days.

Scan and biopsy results are discussed at our weekly diagnostic Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting, which consists of Surgeons, Radiologists and Pathologists.

Your Consultant will discuss the results and appropriate treatment options with you.

Our inpatient surgical ward is Oswald, and is located directly above the Montgomery Unit. Please click here for more information.

We work closely with The Christie's Hospital in Manchester, and you may be referred for a consultation with the Oncologist to discuss further oncological treatment options if appropriate, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

If you have any queries, concerns or need support at any stage then please contact us.
