Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries

The Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI) at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital is one of 11 in the UK designated to receive and treat spinal cord injured patients.

The centre is one of excellence and serves a catchment of 10 million from North Wales, Mid Wales, South Mersey, Cheshire and The West Midlands and provides a lifelong service to a current population of 3,500 patients.

It is made up of a dedicated Outpatients department, Gladstone Ward and Wrekin Ward and is led by Ward Manager Rebecca Warren.

The team consists of highly skilled nurses who work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team and are dedicated to the holistic management of our patients with spinal injuries, maximising neurological recovery and function, minimising complications and disability, and through follow up appointments after discharge, maintaining health, independence and a good quality of life on an ongoing basis.

MCSI has a dedicated team of Consultants, Doctors, Psychologists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists that will be involved in the patients care from when they are referred to the centre. There is also a Resettlement and Community Liasion Team who support patients who are being discharged. 

Gladstone Ward

Gladstone is a 29-bedded rehabilitation ward for patients following a spinal cord injury.

The team offer an individualised and comprehensive approach to rehab where patients will actively participate in goal planning. 

Wrekin Ward

Wrekin is a 15-bedded ward which primarily looks after patients in the acute phase following a spinal cord injury - approximately six to eight weeks following an injury.

The team provide individualised care to each patient which is appropriate to their individual needs and expectations.
